Home: Prof Mark? Who Cares?

Prof Mark Speaks Out!!!!

OK, who is Prof Mark and why should you care?
Well, I can’t make you care, but perhaps I can make you think.  I’m Prof Mark, adjunct faculty in Sociology, trained in Theology and Biblical thinking and deeply opposed to what I call “Mushy Thinking.”  Well, let me define it for you…

Mushy Thinking???

Have you been around someone when they pick
up a particularly soft or slimy object
(like Jello?), and exclaim:
“Ooh, that’s mushy…”

If you or I were to pick up that item, we too would probably wince and think, “‘Yuk’, you’re right, that feels…squishy!

Exactly!! - Transfer that concept to the realm of “critical or logical thinking” and it describes mushy thinking!!!

It’s……..”squishy” – without real borders, boundaries or substance.

Definition: Mushy Thinking: without extensive thought or research, based on emotion rather than logic; untenable, does not hold up well to examination. Resulting in: mutually exclusive views on the same idea, concept or person. It’s not using logic, it’s opening your mouth and inserting your foot, it’s just a plain mushy way to think…

I promise that you won’t get any of that here…you may not agree with my thinking at times, but you won’t find it mushy, that much I promise.

Why should you care?  Well, whether we agree or not on issues, aren’t we better off for talking about them?  Maybe one of us can learn from the other – or we can both learn something.  Think about it – if for instance, you say the sky is blue, and I say it’s yellow, isn’t one of us wrong?  Yes, I know that some will say that if someone is colored blind and that person says that the sky is yellow, then they are really not wrong, they are just seeing it from their perspective….”Well, come on. lets be consistent and logical here…that’s just silly, stupid and wrong!”  Look, a person who for whatever mental or medical ailment they may have who calls the sky yellow when they are looking at a beautiful and sunny Montana or Texas summer day – is simply wrong.

Here’s the problem with too many people today.  They think that calling a color blind person wrong for mistaking blue for yellow is unkind, harsh and yes, wrong.  Well, I’m not talking about being harsh, and cruel – in fact that is NEVER my point or intention.  Rather I’m simply saying that somethings in life are right,  and some are wrong.  And it does not make you evil to be wrong, it just means that on that particular issue, you don’t have the facts or are choosing to ignore them.

If we are ignorant of facts on an issue – should we go about our merry way thinking that we are right, or should someone come along and correct our understanding?  I choose the latter.  The bottom line is that informed, clear thinking people, make for better neighbors – better everything.  And that’s why we should talk, discuss and even listen to each other.

So welcome aboard. You’ll increasing see articles on  culture, worldview, Bible, pop culture, atheism and more. Some you’ll like, others  you’ll hate, but all will be guaranteed to make you think, and deeply challenge your worldview . And if I can get you to think deeply, then I’ve done my  job.  So here we go…..
